Strategies, Tactics and Traffic…oh my!

My inspiration for this post came from a Facebook entry from my friend Joey Smith

It got me to thinking about the different tactics we use to get traffic (by the way…be on the lookout for “tactics” in this post).

I recently signed on to Amplify [<= tactic] as a part of my overall strategy to get more traffic [<=tactic] to my personal blog. [<=tactic for Amplify]…

Strategy as defined by Wikipedia: [<=tactic]

Strategy refers to a plan of action designed to achieve a particular goal. The word is of military origin, deriving from the Greek word strategos, which roughly translates as general.[1]

In military usage strategy is distinct from tactics, which are concerned with the conduct of an engagement, while strategy is concerned with how different engagements are linked. How a battle is fought is a matter of tactics: the terms and conditions that it is fought on and whether it should be fought at all is a matter of strategy, which is part of the four levels of warfare: political goals or grand strategy, strategy, operations, and tactics.

But I prefer this definition:

Strategies in game theory

In game theory, a strategy refers to one of the options that a player can choose. That is, every player in a non-cooperative game has a set of possible strategies, and must choose one of the choices.

A strategy must specify what action will happen in each contingent state of the game – e.g. if the opponent does A, then take action B, whereas if the opponent does C, take action D.

Strategies in game theory may be random (mixed) or deterministic (pure). That is, in some games, players choose mixed strategies. Pure strategies can be thought of as a special case of mixed strategies, in which only probabilities 0 or 1 are assigned to actions .

The ‘game theory strategy’ [<=tactic] sounds more like a ‘affiliate funnel’ [<=tactic].

So my strategy here is to create lots of traffic and backlinks to my site using various tactics. One of the ‘tactics’ that you see thoughout this post are outgoing links to various sites, and lots of keywords.

Rather than use a single keyword and do lots of ‘keyword stuffing’ [<=tactic], I’m using LOTS of keywords, some of them are long tail, that will show up in searches.

The other tactics that I will use include using portions of this post in my hubpage, squidoo lens, and Amplify site, linking back to this particular post.  I will also Stumble, Digg, Tweet, ping and bookmark the sites I put the posts on, to bring visitors to those sites, and direct them to my main site (a.k.a. this post). Maybe I’ll go out to Authorstream and load a pdf of the post describing how to use tactics to drive traffic [<=tactic]

I love the way Amplify (and Clipmarks, which also created Amplify), allows me to grab a portion of my blog posts and slap it into anything I am creating, or create an instant Amplify post, and it provides a great link back to the original site. Link Love!! Backlinks! Yea!

It’s good to have an end result in mind when devising your strategy, no matter what you are doing, or you will end up nowhere.

Then lay out the tactics you will use (a.k.a Plan of Action) to achieve your strategic goals.

If you are looking for a great read on ‘getting more website traffic’ [<=tactic] then I recommend an ebook that I sell (and here’s that ever important disclaimer that I will ‘make money’ should you decide to take advantage of my offer). Head over to Website Traffic Explosion and grab a copy for yourself!

Above all… have fun using all the tactics.

Your Awakening by Jonathan Freeman

I visited my friend Jonathan’s blog today, and browsed through to the post I am going to share. I loved the thoughts and feelings that came through and the things it made me think about so I am posting a portion of it here, in the hopes that you will click through and continue reading the rest.

Your Awakening

A time comes in your life when you finally get…when, in the midst of all your fears and insanity, you stop dead in your tracks and somewhere the voice inside your head cries out…ENOUGH! Enough fighting and crying and blaming and struggling to hold on. Then, like a child quieting down after a tantrum, you blink back your tears and begin to look at the world through new eyes.

This is your awakening…. read the rest of the post here…

Background Images in Posts

some really old thongs that have traveled far and wide with me

Okay, while on Twitter, I see my friend @DanLopez2012 tweet that he figured out a kewl way to do a background image in a post.  And the geek in me had to check it out.  So I grabbed a random pic that was on my server and threw it into the code.

Here’s the code:

<div style=”background-image: url(; width: 100%; height: 100%;”>

The pic of the thongs are only 148px by 160px or something like that. The code repeats it across the screen. But if I use the actual size of the pic in the code, then the text itself is only as wide. It effects the entire post. But on the really kewl side, if you have a nice big pic that you want to use as a background image in a post, vwhalla!

Thanks Dan, for another really good BSO (bright shiny object). At least this one had an education and purpose to it!

Feel free to swipe the code and use it, but make sure you thank Dan for it (you can find him on Twitter!)
